When used in a vivarium, willow leaf acts as a supplement, providing vital nutrients back into the soil as it breaks down. Willow bark contains calcium, indole butyric acid, a plant rooting hormone, and salicylic acid, a metabolite of aspirin along with many other beneficial nutrients.
Willow leaves (and the stems) are also food for creatures small and large, from isopods, shrimp and micro organisms to rabbits, guinea pigs, bearded dragons and iguanas. When used as leaf litter it can also be a hiding place for the fauna.
